life at the lake

forty years ago this year, my father and a friend of his, jim, bought a camp on a little lake outside of town together. FISHING it was their bachelors’ pad-no heat aside from a fireplace, no insulation to really speak of-but lots of fish available and a great view. dock well, the ambiance at the lake has changed a bit over the years. now instead of burning the names of their current girlfriends into the mantle the fireplace poker, they go fishing with the grand kids. oh, and their wives (aka the grandmas) are both quietly waiting for the mantle with unknown womens names on it to meet with an unfortunate “accident”. three boys and, of course, when the term “party” is used around the camp nowadays in generally refers to the end of the year party thrown for the sunday school kids from church, but hey-aside from the fruit punch a-flowin’ instead of…other beverages… and the level of just how underage the kids are, i’m sure there’s not that much of a difference.

in fact, the more i think about it, the more i wonder if the wild and crazy days haven’t actually ended, but have rather simply… bug's dipadjusted a bit.
